A community that shows up

Most people in Uganda face healthcare costs alone. The pool means you don't have to.

The Walter Foundation pool supports all genuine medical needs — including pre-existing conditions, chronic illness, and serious conditions like cancer. Everyone is welcome regardless of their health history. The support limits protect the pool fairly and equally for all members, subject to available funds.

Roger broke both legs in an accident. A free clinic said they would have to amputate. We said no — and found a way.
Jinja, Uganda · 2025

Roger and Cissy ran an orphanage in Uganda. When Roger was seriously injured in a road accident — both legs broken, his wages stolen at the scene — strangers brought him to a free clinic. The diagnosis was amputation. His wife Cissy called us in New Zealand, desperate.

We felt led to direct her to a different hospital along the Nile. She went. They said they could save his legs. Over the weeks that followed, Cissy herself was found to need emergency surgery — a serious intestinal infection requiring a procedure none of us had budgeted for. We had almost nothing, but we kept believing and kept finding a way — a hundred dollars here, a friend in Whangārei who gave UGX 1,062,000, strangers moved to help. In total, UGX 9,558,000 was raised and Roger's legs were saved. Cissy had her surgery. They both recovered.

That experience — scrambling to find money, watching a hospital threaten to turn away a man who couldn't pay, witnessing what was possible when people came together — is why the Walter Foundation Community Health Pool exists. So that no one has to scramble.

Why this pool matters

Uganda spends roughly 4.2–4.67% of GDP on health — around USD 57–63 per person per year across all health spending, public and private. The WHO recommends a minimum of USD 86 for basic essential care. The gap is real — and most of it falls on families.

More than a shared fund

The pool is where we start. Where we hope to go is bigger — a Uganda where communities can access the healthcare they deserve.

🩺

Training healthcare workers

Where surplus funds allow, we aim to invest in training nurses, midwives, and community health workers across Uganda.

🏥

Growing the provider network

We hope to expand our approved network to include rural and community clinics, bringing care closer to where members actually live.
